Oramat Pongtanakorn, 48, owner and founder of Hammat-Sby Ordinary
Partnership. Oramat has turned her talent for making bobbin lace
for hammocks into a global success after feeling the severe pinch of the
country's economic crisis in the second half of 1997. For Oramat, making
bobbin lace was a dormant skill she had learned while running her own
land-development company, Fantasy Land Co.
"I enjoyed learning several handicrafts, including cross stitch, crochet
and needlework. I went to Chiang Mai every week by air to learn how to
[make bobbin lace] with an expert. I studied because I loved it. I did
not know it would help me when I faced a difficult period," she
recalled.
Like other local land developers, Oramat was overwhelmed by a mountain
of debt after the baht crash. Hers totaled more than Bt30 million, which
forced her to suspend indefinitely her real-estate project, Fantasia
Village in Samut Prakan province. She also needed to put herself at the
negotiating table and face her creditors for financial restructuring.
Oramat noted that she once had cash flow of more than Bt10 million per
month. But after the crisis broke out, she had to survive on Bt10,000
per month and spent the next two years spinning her wheels. "But finally
a brilliant idea sprang up one day when I stood up on my 300-rai garden
in Ratchaburi province. This inspired me to make bobbin lace again and
produce hammocks for export. I felt this could be the right product for
Westerners," Oramat said.
