M & H Manufacturing Co., Ltd., formerly
known as Merck Sharp & Dohme (Thailand) Ltd., was founded by Dr. Khasem
Pangsrivongse who achieved the distinction of being Thailand’s first
postgraduate in pharmacy abroad, at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy
& Science, United States of America. He started his early career by
teaching pharmacy courses and dedicated his efforts together with a
group of teachers, to elevate the Pharmacy Department at Siriraj
Hospital to be the first Faculty of Pharmacy at Bachelor Degree level.
He was also the founder and the first president of T.P.M.A. (Thai
Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association). In 1954, he was bestowed a
D.Sc. by His Majesty King BHUMIBOL ADULYADEJ.
Mr. Pricha Asvaintra, Managing Director of B.L.H. Trading Co., Ltd.,
(the sole distributor of pharmaceutical products imported from Merck &
Co., Inc., New Jersey, U.S.A.) was one of the founders, who started to
effectively innovate the Thai pharmaceutical market during his early
years of administration in 1949. Despite unstable market conditions,
unfavourable economic environment and difficulties in handling sales and
distribution at that time, he overcame many marketing obstacles, and
Merck imported products finally ranked as a leading and well-known brand
in Thailand.
Company History
With a broad vision and a dynamic management style, Dr. Khasem, Mr.
Pricha and Mr. Siva-Asva Asvakiat, (The Company’s Board of Director )
decided to establish a local pharmaceutical manufacturing plant in
Thailand. As a result, B.L.H. entered into a joint venture agreement to
form Merck Sharp & Dohme (Thailand) Ltd. in June 1959. The initial
production of pharmaceutical products started in April 1960. It was the
first pharmaceutical plant to receive promotion privileges from the
Thailand Board of Investment and to be Merck’s first integrated chemical
and pharmaceutical plant in Asia.
Later in 1964, Mr. Richard C. Ma, one of the Company founders, was
appointed Managing Director of the company. With his dedication to
management and plant operations, Merck Sharp & Dohme (Thailand) Ltd.
grew rapidly and earned a reputation for its quality and technical
innovations. Subsequently, Mr. Ma became Regional Director of Merck
Sharp & Dohme International, U.S.A. for Southeast Asia.
The Company was renamed M & H Manufacturing Co., Ltd. in 1986 and
appointed the Licensee of Merck & Co., Inc. for the import and local
manufacture of Merck products. The manufacturing and quality control
procedures of the products, inclusive of process control and validation
assessments are operated under the control of Merck in order to ensure
that the Merck worldwide standard of “One Quality Policy” is maintained.
Since 1989 the Company receives the GMP Certificate from the Thai Food
and Drug Administration, of the Ministry of Public Health to certify
that the products manufactured conform with the established standards
laid down in accordance with the recommendation of the World Health
Organization. The product groups manufactured by M&H include sterile
powder and liquid, tablets, capsules, liquid preparations, cream and
powder products. M&H was also awarded the ISO 9002 Certificate in 2000,
certifying that the Quality Management System of the Company is in
accordance with the requirements of the quality standards for the
manufacture of pharmaceutical products
