Chatuchak, the weekend market in the north
of Bangkok has recently expanded. There is an a new area to the rear of
the old market that is home to many small art companies, art dealers and
the beautiful paintings, sculptures and other objects d'art that they
produce. Here you can buy pieces of art by
Thai artists who specialize in many
different styles from contemporary art, modern art, to classical art
styles. It is also possible to commission your own works and have them
delivered to your hotel before you return home.
Pattaya, especially the area around walking
street has a number of art shops that specialize in producing on the
spot your own commission portraits and copies of photographs in art form of your
snapshots from home or holiday. Small or large pictures in Oil paintings
or water colours can be made for a fraction of the cost from back home
and the quality is good, not fantastic, just good.
A word of warning here - do be careful
when ordering a painting to be posted to your home for after you return
for holiday. There are scrupulous and honest art companies but there are
also dishonest folks who will palm you off with shoddy workmanship or
even worse, no workmanship at all.

These 'professional' artists are also
adept at copying fine works of art. However I am not so sure what is
going to happen when you get back home and the customs guy says "do you
have anything to declare" and you reply "well I do have a few
masterpieces by Leornado, Van Goh and Monet"
