In Thailand we have many Farang. We have British Farang, American Farang, Australian Farang, Kiwi Farang, French and German Farang but no Japanese, African or Chinese Farang. Why not? well to be a farang, a true farang, you have got to be Caucasian and have a big nose.

Thais are a notoriously racist society. Not always in a bad way but just in terms of classifying the visitors who come to their kingdom in terms of their ethnicity, skin colour and size of their noses. And yes I use the word 'visitor' in the widest sense. I have lived in Bangkok for the best part of 20 years but I am farang and so classed as a visitor, a temporary resident to the 'Land of Smiles'

Few farangs ever make it past the visitor stage and become residents of Thailand. It is possible to become a permanent resident, pass a few exams, satisfy the length of stay criteria and put a lot of money in the bank. You can then call your self a resident of Thailand. However if you look Caucasian and have a big nose nose you will still be a Farang. Confused? don't be - this is Thailand.
