Thailand Travel Companies not only
arrange holidays and tours in Thailand but also to neighbouring
countries like Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia and Myanmar. Popular at
the moment are Thai adventure tours and eco-tourism in Thailand is
enjoying a dubious upturn. Why dubious? well I have my own serious
doubts that many of these companies are altruistically driven rather
than financially driven but that's their business not mine. Just be
aware that many locals, although they will make some money from these
"Green Dreams" will suffer in the long term as they become just another
bunch of monkeys in the western zoo tour mentality.

First of all let me make it clear, I am not
an expert on tourism in Thailand. I have never taken an organized tour,
I have never been to Phuket. I have never visited Koh Samui. I spent a
week in Phang Nga just before the dreadful Tsunami hit but I was not on
vacation I was working filming a movie on location.
I have lived in Bangkok for over ten years.
I have never visited the floating market. I have never taken a trip to
Safari World, The Rose Garden or the Crocodile Farm although I did have
dinner with the daughter of the owner of the Crocodile Farm once.
I have been to Patpong many many times
but usually in the daytime using Patpong as a shortcut from one client
on Silom Road to another on Suriwong Road. I hate Patpong at night -
crowded, smelly and a hassle with all the touts offering all manner of
sexual treats, shows and massage parlours.

Part of my job is to act as a Bangkok
Buddy to visiting businessmen and businesswomen. What they usually want
after a busy day visiting the factories is a good meal in a Thai
restaurant and a quiet beer away from the hotel.
Although I live in Bangkok I am still a
tourist. As a foreigner (farang) living here I will never be a resident
even if I obtain a resident visa. I am a foreigner, an alien an
outsider. I travel outside Thailand frequently on business, to visit
shows in Singapore and Hong Kong and to do the regular 'visa run' when I
return the Thai immigration official always asks 'how long you stay
Thailand?" my usual reply is "for ever" No raised eyebrows he has heard
this so many times before. One clever official seemed tired with this
response. His answer was "for ever queue over there" I fell for it. I
went over to the 'for ever queue' he was right it took forever to get
served.
So what is my idea of a perfect Thailand
holiday - easy. From my condo I hop on the Sky Train, five minutes to
Ekamai bus station. Two hours to Pattaya. Book in a hotel for the
weekend. Put on a t-shirt and shorts and head for the nearest bar.
"hello hansum man - how long you stay Pattaya. you speak Thai?" " Oh I
come Pattaya today and no I don't speak Thai (not today)" "give me an
ice cold beer please"
Update 2007
Well I no longer have to hop on the bus
to head for Pattaya. I bought a
condo in Jomtien. So now as I work on my
computer I can at least look out the window and feel that I am on
holiday. Life is tough in Thailand
