Am at a Thai friends house and just had lunch. We got to talking about CR's food for thought and realized that I had missed something perhaps even more important than how to accept an invitation to eat with a family or friends.
Sooner or later, during the meal, someone will ask in thai "Aloi Mai?" meaning "Does it taste good?". Both words are pronounced with a rising tone as if asking a question. ALWAYS answer "Aloi" even if it is not to your taste. Answer "Aloi Mahk" if you like it, and "Aloi Mahk Mahk" if you Really like something, and you will be assured of being served the same thing the next time you eat there. Or if in Issan "Zab ilii". Never say "Mai Dee" in answer to "Aloi Mai" as some novice farangs will say, thinking that they are saying that the food is not too tasty. Used in this context it would mean that the food is tainted as in gone bad, definatley not a nice thing to say. Chai mai CR?
Chok Dee
