Escalators are becoming much more common in Bangkok. With the construction of the Sky Train and Subway systems it is imperative to get large numbers of people up there or down there as quickly and efficiently as possible. The Sky train stations are positioned normally at about 4 storeys above street level. Of the 20 or so stations original built only three were fitted with escalators and very few had disabled lifts to allow wheelchair access. My how that soon changed when they realized Thai people were much too lazy to climb umpteen flights of stairs.

I do have a few gripes about escalators however. Why oh why when you go up an escalator in a department store do you have to walk in a circle maybe 50 meters to go to the other side of the sales floor to mount the next flight of escalators. The answer of course is to make you walk past more merchandise. When will the stores realize that they only serve to annoy the customers who as often as not will next time go and spend their money in a shop that doesn't give them the 'run around'
