Few restaurants in Bangkok have been as consistently popular over
the years as L'Opera on Sukhumvit Soi 39. Now its Italian owner, the
indefatigable Rossano, has made a major move by taking over a small house near
the restaurant and turning it into an attractive outlet called Opera Riserva
1983, which he describes as a "winetheque", though most customers will no doubt
call it a "wine bar".
Rossano's manager here is fellow Italian Roberto Ferrin, his former chef at
L'Opera, who says he has more than 200 wines in stock, making it one of the
city's largest wine cellars. The bar also has a small menu, with a selection of
tapas at 160 to 250 baht, or 450 baht with wine. One of the items that caught my
eye was the seafood caviar tartare, featuring mini-blinis with beluga caviar and
quail eggs on seafood tartare at 550 baht.
A selection of wines is available by the glass. The beautiful interior of Opera
Riserva is the handiwork of two talented interior designers, who have given the
venue what may well be the city's first glass staircase and a private upstairs
room complete with sumptuous leather furniture. Rossano reckons that his newest
venture is the ideal place to start and end an evening with dinner next door at
