Petroleum products have played a major role in supporting
Thailand's economic expansion. The increase in the country's petroleum
consumption in the past few decades, however, had given rise to concerns about
the environment and the safety of transporting petrol by land and by river. In
the late 1980s, the Thai Government realized the need for an alternative way of
transporting large volumes of petroleum products that is not only safe but also
cost-effective and energy efficient.
In the early 1990s, the Cabinet passed a resolution approving the construction
of Thailand's first multiproduct oil pipeline from Sriracha in the east to
Saraburi in the central region by the Thai Petroleum Pipeline Company Limited (Thappline),
a joint venture by a number of petroleum companies. Today, Thappline supplies
30-40 % of the refined petroleum products consumed in the nation through its
distribution network of 255 kilometers of pipeline, railway cars, and trucks.
All systems are designed to meet the changing needs of customers in the safest
and most efficient way. |
