Shadow Island
Set in the idyllic setting of Sattahip, production is underway
(principle photography started November 1st) for Shadow Island, a
feature film co-production between two Thai companies, FM Film Co., Ltd,
Ltd and Storm Productions Co., Ltd.
A horror thriller, the film has some well known Thai/Farang cast and
will also be a breakout movie for some new comers. Ken Streutker plays
the evil Thomas Saville who sets up his son and his son’s friends to die
to pay for his past greed. His son Peter, played by David Asavanond (Tom
Yum Goong) takes his girlfriend Simone (Angela May), Jack (Patou Whale)
and Jane (Anna Issaraporn) to the mysterious island for a holiday after
completing their university studies.
Producers, expat Englishman Stephen Rouse and Sarun Srisomsub have
brought together an international cast and crew to ensure maximum
success in independent markets exposing Thailand as an ideal place to
film. Rouse says shooting in Thailand is the most rewarding experience
of his life both as a filmmaker and personally.
The Director, Robin Jacob is the CEO of Tiger Films in Singapore and
Tiger Records in the Philippines. With more than 30 years experience in
the motion picture and entertainment industry, brings to the production
his skills as not only a Director but as an acclaimed international
Editor. He will also arrange the music and distribute the sound track
through his label in the Philippines.
Directors of Photography are Mr Carroll Ravers from New York and Mr
Laurie Gilbert from Singapore.
Cameras are High Definition Sony Altavista F900’s and the first time
Lawes has used them. He says they are quite versatile and for a low
budget movie, are ideal. Lighting as always, is critical (his former
background) and the lighting for a horror thriller is also a major part
of the movie. Both DP’s have shot HD before using film lenses on the
camera bodies.
Shadow Island was an original story from Executive Producer and 2nd Unit
Director, Stephen Rouse an expat English Director with a very creative
side who enjoyed developing the story with Kevin Harriman and Robin
Jacob.
Equipment is being supplied by one of Asia’s largest rental houses,
Cinerent Limited. Majority of crew and most cast are Thai and there are
a few attachments for experience but all in all, the crew number around
60.
Carroll Ravers said he had never worked on a film of this structure and
was surprised at the ease at which things happened. He commented ‘this
is the best camera, grip and lighting crew he had ever worked with!’
Behind the scenes is Producer Michael (Sarun) Srisomsub with more than
20 years experience in production of international movies with some
major credits to his name. He is also unofficially the Line Producer and
has a strong team around him for support. A multi linguist, he has the
respect of all cast and crew.
The film by all accounts, has created a stir. Already described by Robin
Jacob as having a good look. He has used the subtlety of lighting
changes as the story changes from a holiday to a horror day! Scenes
reminiscent of a tourist brochure soon becomes the viewers nightmare as
the light fades, the darkness forms and the weather sours. Doing most
effects “in camera” and all Foley on site, he said the quality of the
film is remarkable. |
