Singapore IT MNC sets up Linux Competency Centre to meet strong demand
for Red Hat Linux Training and Services
BANGKOK, Thailand, 29 November 2002 - A Singapore main-board listed
information and communications technology provider, Singapore Computer
Systems (SCS), has set up a Linux Competency Centre here in Bangkok in
response to strong demand for its services. The SCS Linux Competency
Centre (SCS-LCC) is also an appointed Red Hat Authorised Training and
Certification Centre, the first of its kind in the country. The Centre
plans to target the government, corporate and education sectors where
there are already significant levels of adoption of open source and
Linux technology.
SCS presently runs two other Linux Competency Centres in Singapore and
in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where it also has offices.
The Centre has been appointed by Red Hat, the world's premier open
source and Linux provider as its Training Partner in Thailand. The
Centre runs Red Hat Linux courses and also offers the internationally
recognised Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) certification which is
currently ranked as one of the top IT certifications available in the
market.*
Mr Pang Yang Oon, director of SCS Enterprise Systems (Thailand),
announced this when he opened an event today at the Grand Hyatt Erawan
to mark the official launch of the Competency Centre.
"The Centre serves as a single service point for Linux hardware,
software, solutions and services. With Linux deployment already being
pervasive in the education arena, our aim is to bring Linux solutions to
the enterprises. Linux is fast becoming an increasingly attractive,
viable and compelling proposition to businesses. When compared to some
other platforms, Linux offers lower total cost of ownership (TCO), but
yet delivers on its promises of creating higher value for businesses,"
said Mr Pang.
Added Mr Laurence Liew who will be managing the Centre, "As Thailand is
the hotbed of Linux and open source applications and technology in the
region, we are indeed pleased to be a part of this vibrant local scene.
Working together with our technology partners, IBM, Red Hat and Computer
Associates, we see ourselves as being a leading Linux player in the
country in the next six to 12 months."
Mr Chris Sharp, Red Hat Asia-Pacific's regional sales director, said:
"The uptake of Red Hat training in Asia has been strongest in this
region. We are seeing strong demand for high quality Linux training, and
through SCS, we will further extend our reach. We have worked well with
SCS in Singapore and Malaysia, and we are certain, that Thailand will be

the number of IT professionals are increasing each year, and many of
