For a country of it's size and population I am surprised by how often I bump into Belgian Businessmen here in Bangkok. They certainly seem to be very active in the service as well as industrial sectors.

In fact one of my favorite companies in Thailand is Belgian owned. Run by Managing Director Jean-Louis Graindorge who took over the chocolate making business from his father. I visited their company last year to arrange some training courses and was treated to some most delicious chocolate confectionary samples. As Thailand is such a hot country it was quite a surprise to find a chocolate factory in the heart of Bangkok They have adapted their chocolate making process to suit the hot climate and now supply many of the major hotels in Bangkok with exquisite chocolate confectionary products.

Thailand Belgian Trade - Trade between Thailand and Belgium now totals some 2 billion € per year. The economic and commercial relations between both countries are very dynamic (showing very impressive double-digit growth rates) and, in terms of quality, they are excellent, as they are backed up by solid investments, quite often in economic sectors upstream (such as utilities and most of the industrial sectors). Many of the larger Belgian companies have invested in Thailand, and quite often, their investment here serves as a headquarters for the region - Embassy of Belgium in Bangkok

BELGIAN-THAI RELATIONS - AN OVERVIEW
Belgian-Thai relations stretch back to 1868 when the two countries signed a Treaty of Friendship and Commerce. Then in 1892, King Chulalongkorn invited a Belgian lawyer and former Belgian Minister of the Interior, Mr Gustave Rolin-Jacquemyns, to become his principal advisor. Mr Rolin-Jacquemyns brought a small group of legal advisors with him and they helped the Kingdom of Thailand maintain its independence at the turn of the century.

Today, one of the descendants of the Jacquemyns family is still serving Thailand as an Honorary Consul in Liege, Belgium.

A relationship of mutual trust between the two countries is reflected in the cordial relations between the two monarchies. Although King Baudouin died in 1993, he and King Bhumibol Adulyadej were close friends and both were very concerned with the underprivileged and promoting sustainable development.
