Otoplasty: is the medical term for the
operation, which corrects prominent ears Commonly known as Ear Pinning
Otoplasty is quite a commonly performed procedure. The problem is caused by
a failure during the baby's development to complete the folding process in
the cartilage of the newly formed ear. Because of this incomplete folding
the ears stand away from the side of the head.
The operation involves correcting the shape of the ear cartilage. The work
is done from the back of the ear so that no scars can be seen from the
front.
The procedure is appropriate for patients aged five or six and above.
Otoplasty is often recommended for children prior to their entering primary
school to help eliminate potential psychological trauma caused by
teasing, but ear correction can be done at any age. It involves an
incision in the back of the ear that is sutured following the
repositioning of the ear.
The ears are bandaged for several days, and the desired look will be
achieved within 10 to 20 days. The procedure takes about one hour to
complete and the patient goes home the same day. |

It is necessary to wear a full head bandage
for one week in order to protect the ears. The sutures are removed after
twelve to fourteen days.
