Delightful Thai Cooking by Eng Tie Ang, Donald R. Bissonnette (Designer) (Paperback - August 1991)

Can't be beat. gets right to the point. Preparation of Thai food is easy: what a Thai housewife would do after work, so you can forget about the five pots and the special tool for peeling bamboo shoots. And what I love best: the Thai recipes WORK. They come out just right, they taste like a Thai restaurant and they don't seem to have come from Thai Woman's Day. The spring rolls are AWESOME. The green curry with shrimp caused people to keep talking about it to me two years later. Not fussy.

Descriptions of Old Siam (Oxford in Asia Paperbacks)  (Oxford in Asia Paperbacks) by Michael Smithies This Thailand travel book is both a scholar's and an arm-chair traveler's delight as you travel through Thailand (and Burma) through the eyes of travelers from different times and places. I found the differing views of daily Thai  life very interesting. There is also much to read about in the areas of wats/bots (Thai temples) and Thai art. It's not an easy read, though, and I found the print too small for prolonged sampling.

A Siamese Tragedy : Development and Disintegration in Modern Thailand  by Walden Bello, et al (Hardcover - February 1999) Nice Example for New Economy Tragedy, June 19, 2000
Reviewer: Surapon from Thailand
We have studied about free trade and free flow of money. Theory said it would create more benefits to consumers and countries. But what would happen if it is used in a wrong way. People say Thailand has everything US or Japan has, but she still doesn't develop. This Thai history book will provide you a nice example about the starting of a crisis in Thailand which expanded to other countries in South East Asia. Explain to you step by step and also show many ideas and opinions about the Thai crisis. Nice Work

The Dive Sites of Thailand (Serial) by Paul Lees  For the diver or tourist who is contemplating a visit to Thailand's reefs this book is an absolute gem. Ideal for divers and snorkellers of all standards, it is well presented and extremely informative. The number and quality of the Thai sites reviewed is very good and it must be noted that the information concerning other divers needs i.e. accommodation in Thailand, equipment hire, Thai dive companies, photography in Thailand and Thai medical arrangements is equally commendable. A Thai diving reference book that I can guarantee will be well thumbed for a good few years

Dragon's Fin Soup makes a second debut
Although this book came out from EMR about a year ago, that publisher transformed itself into Babbage Press, with new management, and this is a revamped edition with beautiful type and more striking design. Although the stories have mostly appeared before, this is the first collection of all my fantasy, horror, and science fiction stories set in Thailand. It contains the World Fantasy Award nominated title story as well as "Diamonds Aren't Forever," the Sturgeon Award nominee. Easy Thai Cooking  by Akiko Ujiie

Reviewer: Laura Young from Browns Mills, NJ United States
My mother is Thai, so I grew up eating the delicious Thai cuisine of Thailand daily. After I went to College I realized how much I missed eating good Thai food everyday. Well after getting my mom's Thai recipes, I wanted to supplement her recipes with other Thai recipes. So, I now have a habit of buying every Thai Cookbook I can get my hands on.

This Thai cookbook is one of the best I have come across. First of all it has most of the Thai recipes for foods that people usual associate with Thailand. The Thai recipes are easy to follow, the Thai ingredients very accessible, and they taste great! The added bonus is that each Thai recipe has a full color picture to show you what your meal should look like. This is a must for people who are attempting the Thai recipe for the first time. I have already recommended this Thai cookbook to all of my friends and I think it is a must have for your international cookbook library.

Easy Thai; An Introduction to the Thai Language, With Exercises and Answer Key  by Gordon H. Allison

Read Thai in 4 days, September 4, 2000
Reviewer: Pat Hopper from Thailand
I learnt to write Thai sat on a beach in four days with this book. Of course it's not that simple after the four days I could not delineate words at all. I had to start reading a children's picture dictionary, then reading Thai books for very young children etc. To write Thai I had to buy Thai children's letter writing books.

But this book does a good job of giving you the basics. The Thai vocab is strange because to start with you only know a few Thai characters and so there are only a few Thai words they can use.

There are some mistakes in the exercises and they have been left in in subsequent editions because the author is Thai. Do all the exercises though - they work.

It also ends too soon - just introduces the Thai vowels and Thai tones and then stops. It could have done with some more work on these areas.

This book will teach you to read Thai.

An old book that's still OK, January 9, 2000
Reviewer: Jim Higbie  from Vientiane, Laos
I used this Thai language course book 20 years ago when I started learning Thai. It was one of the only Thai language course books available then, and was printed in the Thailand of 25 years ago, which is why other reviews have complaints about the Thai fonts, etc. Nevertheless, I remember learning to read Thai quickly from the book and thought Allison's sequencing was good.

 Reviewer: Ian Gopnik  from Massachusetts
If you want to learn Thai, you can find much much better books than this. The printing quality is very bad, so that the subtleties of Thai letters are totally lost. The vocabulary is weird indeed -- not the sort of words you will use. I suggest getting the Teach Yourself series' Thai book. Better yet, go to Thailand.

Seconds to all comments from the reader from Osaka who writes below.

Title should be "Useless, Boring Thai", March 19, 1999
Reviewer: A reader from Osaka, Japan
The beauty of the Thai alphabet has always fascinated me and I purchased this Thai language course book back in grad school, only because it was the only one I could find that teaches the Thai alphabet. "Easy Thai" was such an incredible disappointment that I never got very far with it. I finally learned the Thai alphabet a few years later, thanks to 2 excellent books written (in Japanese) for Japanese learners. While teaching debate at a university in Japan, I conducted an intensive self-study of Thai language for 3 months before taking a trip to Thailand, and completed both Thai books before arriving in Bangkok. It is a pity that these same Thai books are not available to English speakers as well. I have a Master's degree in Teaching Foreign Language and have therefore had the opportunity to review a wide variety of Thai textbooks. One difficulty that learners of less-studied languages face is the lack of good textbooks and other materials. This book may unfortunately be your only choice if you're serious about learning the Thai alphabet (and don't happen to speak Japanese), but it's not a pretty picture.

My main complaints are:

(1) The book is rife with useless Thai words (especially for beginners!), useless Thai expressions, awkward Thai sentence structure, poor Thai translations, and outdated and/or inappropriate terms like "Chinaman." SEE BELOW for examples.

(2) The phonetic system for representing Thai sounds is a mess, full of capital letters, explanation points, and unnecessary letters. Believe me - there's a far better way!

(3) shoddy format and layout, poor print quality (Thai letters are hard to read), inadequate/unclear explanations, boring beyond words

Incredibly enough, the author actually acknowledges (in the preface) the problems of useless Thai words and boring exercises: "...some of the Thai words used are admittedly not the most-useful ones. (...) Please forgive us if our exercises seem boring or unnecessarily meaningless. You will no doubt appreciate the fact that we are simply trying to initiate you gradually into the mysteries of the Thai language and that it is difficult to concoct much meaning out of a limited number of Thai words. And let us re-emphasize that the following examples are certainly not "deathless Thai prose"; they are only contrived little thoughts to get you to put to work what you have learned."

The exercises don't "seem" boring or unnecessarily meaningless - they are. And there's absolutely no excuse for it. The author claims that it's difficult to make meaningful sentences out of a limited Thai vocabulary. How about: Where's the bathroom? What's your name? It's too hot. I like this food. How much does this cost? Vocabulary in each chapter is of course limited by the Thai letters introduced up to that point, but there are still plenty of useful Thai words that he could have used instead. Even "See Spot run" would be more useful than many of the Thai expressions found in the book. As a trained Thai language teacher myself, I know for a fact that "initiating students gradually into the mysteries of a language" requires neither the use of such insanely useless words nor expressions reminiscent of an LSD trip. And how comforting to know that these boring, meaningless exercises are not "deathless Thai prose," but simply "contrived little thoughts." The author's apology in the preface can only be seen as pathetic: "I know this Thai book sucks - Sorry."

The following is a representative sample of 27 Thai sentences from the Thai book, which readers are asked to translate as practice. Some are intended to be translated into Thai. Others are to be translated from Thai into English, and the English sentences here were taken from the answer key.

1. There is a method for forgetting the wind.

2. Grandmother smells of the plate.

3. He will return the case; that is, his relatives are well off.

4. Wait! In September I'll go see.

5. At the time they were about to lock him up, you sneezed.

6. People have hairs on their legs.

7. Polish his tongs!

8. Conduct the ceremony for returning the flag.

9. Who belched?

10. Look at grandmother pouring.

11. Look at grandmother's neck.

12. A ghost has come.

13. I ran into the Chinaman's leg.

14. My rice farm has a ghost on it.

15. As soon as I sniffed, I sneezed.

16. There are some Laotians who have burdens.

17. A tiger came (walked here) to see you.

18. The boss returned the ivory.

19. It should have a foreword.

20. The lawyer defeats you.

21. As soon as I win, I will come to expand the work.

22. Did Khun Wicha kick him?

23. A Chinese person sneezed.

24. Come and put down the rubber!

25. Perhaps it will be very soiled.

26. There was a priest who brought Mrs. Nipa to work.

27. The Laotian is confused.

Get the picture? One thing is for certain: the Laotian isn't the only one who's confused!

The Elegant Taste of Thailand : Cha Am Cuisine by Pinyo Srisawat, Cha'Am Cuisine, Sisamon Khongphan, Roger Williams
Going to Cha-am is a religious experience for Thai food lovers in the Bay Area. This is a great opportunity to try making Thai dishes at home--and you even get great results. Two words of warning, however: there is not a huge amount of variety in the Thai food presented here (you will still need to go to the Thai restaurant to get many favorites and many Thai standards), and while the glossary was a great idea, the descriptions are confusing and not all of the Thai ingredients that mystify are explained in the glossary.

Elephants of Thailand in Myth, Art, and Reality by Rita Ringis (Hardcover - August 1996)
When thinking of elephants, Thailand is not the first place that comes to most people's mind. However, as described here, Thai elephants have played a major role in Thai art and Thai culture throughout Thai history. The author draws upon 14 years studying & teaching art in Thailand to present this comprehensive view of the Thai elephant in Thai society. She does well in combining Thai art with the Thai elephants' active ceremonial & working roles. Thai elephants are shown in many Thai art forms including Thai drawings, Thai engravings, Thai murals, Thai sculpture & Thai bronzes. Well illustrated in b/w, there is also a 16 page color gallery showing a great variety of Thai art and Thai architectural detail. The physical characteristics of the Thai elephant and its current endangered status are covered here as well. This book provides an excellent overall view of the Thai elephant's central role in Thai life & Thai culture.

The Emerald Buddha Conspiracy by Benjamin Izell (Hardcover)

Book Description
This is a novel of international intrigue based largely in Thailand and inspired by the actual existence of a jade statue of a Thai Buddha that is venerated and carefully guarded as a Thai national treasure. The story describes the secret theft of the Thai statue, the replacement of the actual Thai statue with a close reproduction of it, and the threat by a revolutionary force to reveal the secret and thus topple the Thai government. A former U.S. Military Intelligence agent, now an Asian art dealer in Texas, takes on the duty of recovering the actual Thai statue before the announcement of its theft and the attempted coup take place.

About the Author
Benjamin Izell, the author, is the pseudonym for a PhD anthropologist who spends much of his time in the Orient and has an intimate knowledge of its culture. This is his first novel, but he is the author of 14 scholarly books and more than 100 articles

The year is 1986. The Emerald Buddha, the most sacred religious symbol of the Thai people, has been stolen and replaced with a copy in an attempt to blackmail the government.

Peter Froste, formerly with U.S. Military Intelligence in Vietnam, and now a Dallas art dealer specializing in fine arts from Asia, is persuaded to return to Thailand to help recover the Thai statue by his former boss, Phillip Rollings, head of CIA operations in Thailand. Froste initially refuses to become involved until he learns that his former fiance, whom he believed was killed in a helicopter crash ten years ago, is alive, involved in the theft, and a special military agent for Vietnam. With mixed emotions Froste arrives in Bangkok,Thailand hoping not only to recover the Thai Buddha but also to contact his former lover, Francine Lemercinnier aka Colonel Vu Thuong Chu.

I really enjoyed this book . It is well written, easy to read, and a good story. The characters are well developed and the author does a wonderful job of conveying their emotions. The descriptions of the various Thai locations are wonderful. I felt like I had traveled to the temples of Thailand and the opium fields in the mountains. I will look forward to traveling with Benjamin Izell again in his next novel.

Endangered Relations: Negotiating Sex and AIDS in Thailand   by Chris Lyttleton (Hardcover)

The author, Chris Lyttleton , March 7, 2000
Comments on the back cover of Endangered Relations.
This book is about disease and Thai culture. AIDS has become an increasingly prominent symbol of modernity in Thailand, yet ways of dealing with HIV draw on time-honoured understandings of fate and misfortune, disease and contagion, gender and pollution in Thailand. Endangered Relations provides a crucial analysis of how public health manouevres to control the threat of HIV infection in Thailand mesh with local Thai understandings of identity and Thai sexuality, setting in place a broad range of personal and Thai social responses to the ongoing epidemic in Thail;and. An illuminating study of the way in which Thai social relations, and in particular Thai sexualities, shape the history of AIDS in Thailand, Endangered Relations offers a unique perspective on the complicated ways that disease is negotiated in Thai cultural, Thai political and human terms.

I had much admired Lyttleton's journal articles, but found this book to be disappointing. He doesn't mention the low HIV prevalence in the Thai region where he did his work until well into the book. The naive reader may feel misled; the knowledgeable reader will know that much of what Lyttleton has to say is not placed in a proper context. His effort to develop a fairly conventional neo-Marxist political economy of HIV in NE Thailand falls flat when one considers the low prevalence and the lack of linear links to economic conditions in Thailand. This should not avert attention for inequities but, in telling the story of HIV in Thailand one should attend to Thai sexual networking, mixing patterns, Thai social patterns, etc. His treatment of areas in Thailand where he did not do original field work is often superficial, woefully incomplete, and/or muddled. Topics such as Thai homosexuality and vaccine research are hampered by this. The relative success of Thailand's first generation prevention efforts also gets short shrift, which seems typical of many "critical" analyses. The need for new directions need not negate what has been accomplished. Like too much of the writing on HIV in Thailand, the effort to present a rather predictable agenda gets in the way of telling the real story which is far more nuanced and complex than the one offered here.

Energy Efficiency Strategies for Thailand : The Needs and the Benefits : Report of a Conference Held on March 4-6 1988 Pattaya Thailand by Deborah Lynn Bleviss, Vanessa Lide (Hardcover)

Book Description
The conference from which this collection of Thai essays grew was organized to address the importance of energy efficiency for Thailand's future economic growth. Like many developing countries, Thailand has been enjoying an impressive Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rate in the last few years, prompting many to predict that it will soon "graduate" to join the ranks of the newly industrialized countries. However, these positive Thai economic indicators have also been accompanied by a worrisome one: a dramatic increase in energy use. Between 1986 and 1987 energy use grew by over 15 percent-over twice the rate of GDP growth-and Thailand spent over $1.5 billion on imported energy sources. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the global imperatives for implementing energy efficiency measures in Thailand and other developing countries. Case-study examples are then given of the global experience in energy efficiency in Thai industry, buildings, Thai transportation, and electric power generation in Thailand. Co-published with the International Institute for Energy Conservation.

The English Governess at the Siamese Court : Being Recollections of Six Years in the Royal Palace at Bangkok by Anna Harriette Leonowens

While this book was extremely helpful in my research on Anna Leonowens I believe the reader does not get a true picture of her lifein Thailand because there are many gaps in the story. She fails to go into depth on the matter of her popularity with slaves when she often paid for their freedom. I recommend this book for people trying to get a sense of the history of Siam and some stories of her life, however, it may be that she never taught the Thai king's children at all and never met the Thai king. I would recommend Anna and the King of Siam for extensive research.

Reviewer: A reader from San Diego
In 1862 Anna Leonowens went to Bangkok, Thailand with her child, Louis, to teach the Thai royal children in English and western customs and ettiquette. She spent five and a bit more than one half years there. This book is quite different from her other book (The Romance of the Harem) because it is written simply as a travel account. She does reproach the Thai king and share the prejudice of the day but the Thai king is less slandered. She writes heavily. I reccommend this for anyone who has read Anna and the King of Siam or its movie version and the King and I.

Even a Little Is Something : Stories of Nong by Tom Glass, Elena Gerard (Illustrator) (Hardcover - December 1997)

Reading level: Ages 4-8

From Kirkus Reviews , November 15, 1997
Enter a world of dust floors, mosquito netting, and red clay, infused with the smells of rice cakes and somtam, and inhabited by an eclectic assortment of characters: Buffalo Woman and her animal companion Coconut, wise and wacky Mr. Pu, Different Boy, and Aunt Oom the soup lady. Meet Nong, a curious 11-year-old, who lives meagerly with her mother and sister Oi in a rural Thai village in Thailand. Glimpses into Nong's world are revealed in pieces of a patchwork, a crazy quilt of characters, a world of making mistakes and learning--a world of imagining the future. In Glass's first book, each vignette is loosely related by its inclusion of oddball characters; together they depict a way of life. Nong is an eager, compassionate, venturesome girl, ready for what awaits her around the next corner, be it a hidden scorpion, a superstitious soup-maker about to reveal her secret ingredient, or a curry-smudged check that holds a slight promise of a better life for her family and herself. External Finance in Thailand's Development : An Interpretation of Thailand's Growth Boom (International Finance and Development Series) by Karel Jansen, Karel Eansen (Hardcover - November 1997)

Since the 1970s the fluctuations of international finance have been important to the economic fortunes of developing countries, including Thailand. Since 1987 Thailand has experienced high growth, fed by high capital inflows. This book makes a detailed study of the macroeconomic impact of capital inflows during recent years and during an earlier period, in the late 1970s, when growth, and capital inflows, were high. The book shows that questions on the impact of external finance cannot be adequately analysed at the level of economic aggregates. External finance is broken down into its main components: the impact of aid is very different from that of direct foreign investment. Macroeconomic aggregates are also broken down as the response of the government to capital inflows is quite different from that of private corporations. The book analyses the policies that have accompanied the capital inflows. It concludes that a cautious fiscal policy and an exchange rate policy that avoids excessive appreciation of the real exchange rate are central to a macroeconomic environment conducive to a positive impact of capital inflows.

The author, Joshua Eliot , February 9, 2000
Writing a Thai guidebook's no picnic
You probably don't think so, but writing a guidebook is hard work. The four hundred and fifty-fourth toilet looks very much like the four hundred and fifty-fifth. What can one say about a Thai guesthouse which seems identical to the one just down the road? We try, as that car hire firm used to tell its customers, but doubtless sometimes get it wrong. One person's Ritz is another person's Gulag and, after all, writing a Thai guidebook is an art, not a science. But we think (of course!) that we've got it...

Forest Recollections  by Kamala Tiyavanich, Kamala Tiyavanich (Paperback - April 1997)

During the first half of this century the forests of Thailand were home to wandering ascetic monks. They were Thai Buddhists, but their brand of Thai Buddhism did not copy the practices described in ancient doctrinal texts. Their Thai Buddhism found expression in living day-to-day in the Thai forest and in contending with the mental and physical challenges of hunger, pain, fear, and desire. Combining interviews and biographies with an exhaustive knowledge of archival materials and a wide reading of ephemeral popular Thai literature, Kamala Tiyavanich documents the monastic lives of three generations of Thai forest-dwelling ascetics and challenges the stereotype of state-centric Thai Buddhism. Although the tradition of wandering forest ascetics has disappeared, a victim of Thailand's relentless modernization and rampant deforestation, the lives of the Thai monks presented here are a testament to the rich diversity of regional Thai Buddhist traditions. The study of these monastic lineages and practices enriches our understanding of Buddhism in Thailand and elsewhere.

Frommer's Thailand (Frommer's Thailand, 4th Ed) by Jennifer Eveland, John Bozman.  Frommer's Thailand is a great Thai travel guidebook. It is broken down into very helpful sections such as "The Best of Thailand", "What to See and Do" "Where to Stay and Dine" and "Getting There". Jennifer Eveland did a great job writing "Thailand: In Depth". The weight of the book is of perfect weight for carrying around Bangkok and is printed on thick, quality paper. Best of all, the prices are listed for everything! I think that is great because not only do you get only their best recomendations, but you always get the most for your money no matter what your budget. If I found out any of my friends were going to Thailand, I would definately give them my copy of this guide.

Girls aged 5-8 will love this book!, January 8, 1999
Reviewer: A reader from Chicago, IL My daughter (aged 7) identified with the Thai girl in this story, found herself caught up in the girl's desire to dress beautifully for her friends. Then, when the ending twist came, she wasn't sure whether to laugh or cry--but she loved it! I recommend it for parents and grandparents to share with early elementary aged girls (especially). the illustrations are also very colorful and appear to be culturally accurate.

Gold by the Inch by Lawrence Chua (Hardcover - March 1998)
Lawrence Chua has long been praised for his astute cultural commentary and experimental prose. In his first novel, Gold by the Inch, he also proves himself as a vibrant and breathtaking writer of literary prose. The narrative follows a young gay man of Asian descent as he returns to Thailand from the United States for an extended visit and to recover from his father's death and a failed love affair. After becoming involved, well, obsessed, with a young male Thai prostitute, the narrator has to...

The New York Times Book Review, Anderson Tepper
Though Chua's novel can be striking in shards ... ultimately the result is too diffuse and stylized to provide a deeper reflection.

Petulant tale of sex tourism in Thailand  and racial vengeance, December 3, 1999
Reviewer: A reader from Sunnyvale, CA
Even the self-hatred in this narrative is self-indulgent. The narrator (/author?) loathes white gay men who find him attractive and enters into the very hackneyed attempt to have a meaningful, loving relationship with a Thai prostitute. The narrator/author recognizes that to some extent he is a privileged American, but does not notice that in Malaysia (and, to a lesser extent, in Thailand) he is part of a quasi-colonial privileged Chinese elite.

Guns, Girls, Gambling, Ganja : Thailand's Illegal Economy and Public Policy
by Pasuk Phongpaichit, et al (Paperback - March 1999)

Systematic and scholarly study of corruption in Thailand, May 23, 1999
This scholarly research project examines the economic, social and political implications of Thailand's huge illegal economy. Using Thai government documents, published and unpublished Thai research, Thai media reports, anecdotal evidence, key informants, and other Thai resources, the authors--all members of the faculty of Bangkok's Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand -- look at the "industries" of gambling, Thai prostitution, drugs in Thailand, Thai arms trading, oil smuggling and trafficking in people. Empirical data--sensitive and challenging to obtain--are extrapolated reasonably to estimate numbers of individuals involved, the volume in trade, the value added in Thai baht, and the consequent Thai money laundering. Along with their links to international organized crime, these unlawful activities distort the Thai economy, victimize Thai people, provide funding for "Thai money politics" and corrupt Thai law enforcement employees and Thai agencies.

The authors conclude that Thai police reforms are needed to develop a modern Thai economy and a functioning Thai democracy in Thailand. Because the illegal practices described involve important and influential people, some Thai police, other Thai officials and Thai VIPs objected to and denied the controversial draft findings. The authors found themselves threatened, criticized and investigated in attempts to intimidate and silence them.

Numerous tables present the data collection results. The notes and bibliography are comprehensive, the glossary and index valuable.
