Making Out in Thai From the language of eating (a national pastime in Thailand) to affairs of the heart, this Thai book includes all that you need to know to speak Thai  in the colorful colloquial language of the Thai people. With phonetic pronunciations in Thai, you can be speaking real Thai phrases like; Jee'ow! (right on!), Kuhn tam ngam arai- what do you do, Suai jang Kun du dee Suai ngarm- (you look beautiful), and many more. This Thai Language course book was written by John Clewey, a British writer who specializes in non-western Thai music. He has lived in Thailand since 1984 and the insights about Thailand he has picked up are invaluable for readers. Making Out in Thai is a glossy paperback that can fit in a jacket pocket or purse. It is valuable as a Thai phrasebook or as a tool for learning the idiomatic Thai phrases that do not appear in Thai textbooks.

Useful words in Thai. One thing ticked me off: It doesn't have tone marks. When you miss the tones of Thai words - you'll never get a chance to pronounce the Thai words in the right way.

The Man Who Caught Fish  by Walter Lynn Krudop (Hardcover - April 2000)

Reading level: Ages 4-8
A stranger carrying only a fishing pole comes to a village in this morality tale. Every time the pole touches water, the man brings out a fish. "One person, one fish," he says solemnly as he evenly distributes his catch. When the king hears of this, he wants more than his one fish. Driven by pride, he tries tricks and torture to get the man to give him more than his share, but in the end, the king is punished for his greed. The simplicity of the story is complimented by the robust illustrations....

Memoirs of a Bangkok Warrior : A Novel  by Dean Barrett (Paperback - September 1999) Excellent satire, September 16, 2000 A reader from San Diego, CA - This Thai novel is hilarious, especially if you were an enlisted man in the military but is also sometimes moving. However, for me, the chapter entitled, The Chaplain's Last Sermon, is fantastic. A Mark Twain-type satire and a satire on chaplains and prayer and war and thinking that some god somewhere is listening to our prayers to destroy an enemy. It brings to mind Twain's "War Prayer," but this chapter is much more developed. This book would make a hilarious movie. Thin-skinned officers might not like it but anyone with a sense of humor will. The Mini Rough Guide Bankok (Bangkok (Mini Rough Guide)) by Paul Gray, Lucy Ridout (Paperback - May 1999)
Book Description
The headlong pace and flawed modernity of Bangkok match few people's visions of the capital of exotic Siam. Spiked with scores of high-rise buildings of concrete and glass, it's a vast flatness which holds a Thai population of at least seven million, and feels even bigger. But under the shadow of the skyscrapers you'll find a heady mix of chaos and refinement, of frenetic Thai markets and hushed golden Thai temples, of early-morning almsgiving ceremonies and ultra hip designer boutiques

Bangkok in Your Pocket, June 15, 2000 Reviewer: A reader from Issaquah, WA This past Xmas, we had only 3 days to spend in Bangkok. We brought this book, the Lonely Planet Bangkok city map, and Emily Warn's Expedia article on Bangkok -- all of which fit into one jacket pocket, if you fold the map in half. (Compactness is key when you're traveling by tuktuk, bus, and riverboat.) Thus armed, we were able to efficiently cover the main sights of Bangkok without exhausting ourselves too much. (Best places to slow down & relax: the Dusit Zoo and the Thai massage school at Wat Po. Especially the Thai massage school. $5 US for a 1-hour traditional Thai massage -- clothes on, suitable for all ages -- and you'll feel like a new man, woman, or child. Mmm! :-) )

A Missionary in Siam (1860-1870) (Historical Reprints) by N. A. McDonald (Paperback - February 1999)

Summary
This missionary presents a down-to-earth account of life in Siam in the 1860s. This is important source material as there are very few descriptions of Siam by foreigners during that period. Most especially is this true for the coronation of King Chulalongkorn as only a handful of non-Siamese were permitted to witness this auspicious occasion. Throughout this is a book from which the reader can learn about Thailand's past, forgotten events, Thai customs and habits, some of which have disappeared.

Monsoon Country  by Pira Sudham (Paperback - April 1990)

Book Description
Set in Thailand, England and Germany, Monsoon Country conveys the cultural tension between the East and the West, the clashes between the new powers and the old values, covering twenty-five years of socio-economic and political change in Thailand. This Thai novel gives, as no fiction account about Thailand has yet done, insights into Thai life, particularly that of rural Thailand. Foreign writers writing about the Thai people look at Thailand from the - outside", but Pira Sudham writes about his.

About the Author
Pira Sudham was born in a small remote village in northeast Thailand. He spent his early years in the rice fields helping his parents and tending a herd of water buffaloes. At the age of 14, Sudham came to Bangkok where he completed high school and later Thai university, then won a scholarship to a New Zealand university.
Having lived in Hong Kong, Australia and England, he now resides in Thailand, dividing his time between a working life in Bangkok and a village life in a district of Napo, where he...

a novel poet, July 30, 2000
Reviewer: Ben Haines from Bloomington, Illinois USA
This Thai novel is an achievement not often equalled in this climate of moving yet empty 'culture' pieces. Passages of remarkable yet stark beauty capture the degree to which we are bound by our circumstances, to which the meaning of our lives and acts is constrained by the environment in which they exist. And this Thai book captures the difficulty in leaving that Thai environment, in un- and redefining those things which exist at the deepest level of personhood and whose dissolution becomes an act of destruction or self-sacrifice. The doubt over whether this violent act is necessary, or wise, defines the personal journey of Prem, a young Siamese exile, as he must confront his own past as well as his nation's to define his own place in a world where West and East meet uneasily at best. It is an intensely personal journey as well; Pira Sudham is a Thai poet, and as poets do writes from a well of inspiration drawn from his own experiences and observations. Surely the story of Prem echoes Sudham's own journey from the villages of Thailand to a respectable literary life - a journy that involved, as Prem's does, the creation of "a mechanism to turn bitterness into wisdom" and to "transform childhood memories of Thailand into Thai poetry". The book works also as a history of sorts, narrating the difficult journey of Thailand as a nation in transition and capturing in the deeply felt experiences of a few fictional individuals the nature of a land brought so unevenly into the 'modern' world.

Moon Handbooks: Bangkok (3rd Ed.) by Carl Parkes (Paperback)

Book Description
Offering the same exacting coverage found in Carl Parkes's Thailand Handbook, Bangkok Handbook reveals the secrets of the glittering Thai temples and dazzling Thai museums in this teeming Thai metropolis. Parkes recommends riverside dining at the Oriental Hotel, proposes lodging at the rarely visited historic Royal Hotel, and suggests merriment at the nonstop Thai nightclubs of Nana Entertainment Complex. Budget backpackers and luxury travelers alike will appreciate this thorough Thai travel guide.

From a Bangkok expatriate, May 16, 2000 Reviewer: Kevin Cullen from California - I first picked up the initial edition of Bangkok Handbook in 1992. As I worked in Bangkok for 7 years in the 1980s and I was a bit curious as to how deep this Thai travel guide would go. While most Thai travel guide books cover all the basic sights and things to do they often fall short in really getting under the surface. This book did indeed have things to teach me. I ended up taking some of the walking tours myself and used the map of Bangkok river stops extensively.

I like my Thai travel guides to give my some good historical and Thai cultural information in a concise but insightful manner. Take Thai temples. First time visitors are typically struck by their stunning beauty. But what do all the Thai architectural forms mean? What aspects of Thai Buddhism are contained within their design? You could read whole volumes on this at your local university. The Bangkok Handbook, however has a two page spread that will get you up to speed fast with an understanding of the basic terminology and historical usage. To my mind this is what separates the Bangkok Handbook from the more popular Lonely Planet Thai travel survival guides. These "backpacker bibles" may be very good at where to get the cheapest rooms and meals, but really fall short on what you are really seeing while you are there.

Bangkok is both heaven and hell. It's city of fabulous Thai restaurants, fantastic shopping, pristine Thai temples and frantic sex in Thailand. It's polluted, noisy, smelly, ill-planned and hot, hot, hot. And It's traffic is world famous. We used to joke that you could do anything you wanted in Bangkok; you just couldn't get there. (Over the last few years with the advent of many new toll ways and since Dec. 99 the overhead train system in Bangkok this has really abated.)

I've used Parkes book a lot - along with my reprint of the "1928 Guide to Bangkok" which is great for my historical expeditions. And I have found myself in Thailand every year since I've left in 1990.

National Economic Policy by Pridi Banomyong, Kenneth Perry Landon (Paperback)

Book Description
My one paramount aim and purpose in furthering the revolutiong was to promote the welfare of our people. Essentailly my concern was not to replace a single monarch with a multiplicity of monarchs, which constitutes the external semblance of a democracy. I was resolved above all else to do just one thing: 'to advance the welfare of our people'. And I hold that the Thai Constitution comprises the key which is to unlock the door of opportunity to them so that they may have a share in determining the.

The publisher, Martin Rowe , August 11, 2000. A focus on Thai political and economic Thai sovereignty. Written following the 1932 coup that transformed Siam (Thailand) into a constitutional monarchy, this Thai history book is a manifesto for a comprehensive national socioeconomic plan that reflects Pridi Banomyong's visionary political insights and firm understanding of Thai democracy. What is significant about this volume is that in its emphasis on Thai political and economic Thai sovereignty and distribution of productive power to local Thai communities, it presents an alternative to the globalized capitalism that Western..

Night Market : Sexual Cultures and the Thai Economic Miracle by Ryan Bishop, Lillian S. Robinson (Contributor) (Paperback - January 1998) Reviewer: "Charles M. Love" from Rock Springs, Wyoming USA I've been involved in and taught cultural anthropology for 27 years. I don't normally underline very much in a book, but after combing through this one I found I had made some 174 major underlinings, mostly critical. I also made 137 major separate notes in the margins and at the end of chapters, alas, also mostly critical. For those of you who do not wish to read the whole of this review, let me advise you to use this book only as a classic example of how not to do anthropological research and how not to write it, and to a certain extent, how not to publish it (the backing falls apart in less than two readings and you are ultimately treated to piles of pages).

An overblown effort, December 1, 1999
Reviewer: CD Brookins  from San Diego, California
While the subject of this book is very interesting and deserves further study, the authors were very pretensious. The book did offer some new insights into Thai economics and how the tourism and prostituion industries interact, but one gets the feeling the authors wanted to rail against the "Farangs" that travel to the kingdom. Two items particularly irritated me. The first was how the authors referenced documents from a navigator on Christopher Columbus' first voyage to America to describe how foreigners feel about Thai prostitues. How a document written about a voyage before there was a Thailand (or U.S.A. for that matter) pertains to Bangkok massage parlors, I'll never know. The second "documentation" concerned a Thai Air advertisement. The ad featured a stewardess smiling at a white airline traveler. The authors try to convince the reader that this is proof that Thai industries are actively promoting the sex trade. If this is true, nearly every commercial on American television is an active promotion of prostitution in the U.S. There is a need for a serious study of the socio-economic impact of the sex trade in Thailand, but this is not it. This is nothing more than a tirade against prostitution and the foreign travelers who venture to Thailand. How prostitution destroys young Thais is truly a sad story, but the authors should devote a little more effort in researching their subject, rather than blindly grasping at obtuse concepts to prove a predjudicial viewpoint.

Open Road's Thailand by Louis Bechtel (Paperback - April 2000) A CATALOGUE of information for the MODERATE budget trip.,
The most currently popular travel books for Thailand are written with backpackers in mind, those who are trying to stretch the baht until it groans. Lou Bechtel's Guide is more for the typical vacationer with a moderate budget, especially for those who are taking their families with them.

The first thing you notice about this book is the extensive contact information for every single hotel and restaurant listed, and there are lots of them in every location reported. All guidebooks on Thailand cover Bangkok according to the sections of the city. This book adds a section that other books do not have:"Near the Airport," for those jaundiced travelers who wish to "skip Bangkok" other than using the airport.

Lou is frequently engaged to review hotels and cover trade fairs in Asia, so he knows what he is looking for and expecting, both in service and cost. As a travel journalist, he often gets the VIP treatment, but he thinks you should not pay more than necessary to have a good time. Often he just tells the reader, "This is what you should do."

You can read other books on Thailand with all the glossy pictures, to decide where you want to go. Once you have an idea what you would like to do and where you would like to go, this is the book to plan your itinerary.

Patpong Sisters : An American Woman's View of the Bangkok Sex World  by Cleo Odzer

From Book News, Inc. , May 1, 1995
Odzer offers a personal account of her three years in Thailand studying prostitution in a Bangkok red light district catering to foreigners. She interviews bar girls and bar boys, describes their families and lives outside of the district, and reveals her romantic involvement with a Thai pimp. She discusses AIDS and economic oppression of women in Thailand, and concludes that some of the workers are intelligent and entrepreneurial. Includes b&w photos. Lacks an index. Annotation copyright.

Odzer went to Bangkok to study prostitution for her anthropology dissertation, but she comes across as anything but academic in this highly personal, anecdotal account of her experiences in Patpong, the city's thriving red-light district. Indeed, her findings confound expectations. The bar girls Odzer managed to befriend were adept in turning sexual transactions into affairs of the heart, making Western men feel responsible for them and, eventually, their families. Compared to the village life...

SAVE YOUR MONEY, THE AUTHOR ONLY TALKS OF HER THAI BOYFRIEND, October 13, 2000
Reviewer: doris from norfolk, VA United States
if you want a book dealing specifically with prostitution in thailand, how it is done, and what the prostitutes do, and how they live, this book is not informative enough. this book is a description of the time the author spent in bangkok. more often than not, she does not interviewing prostitutes, and she does not bring you into the lives of these slums. she sees the whole prostitution business in a way that is rather naive. rather, as said before, she spends a lot of time talking about her thai boyfriend and other non-relevant things. she does give some important insight on thai prostitution and the white men involved, but it is very little. read this book like you would a novel. i wouldn't recommend you purchase it for research.

Good read, November 26, 1999
Reviewer: Miguel Agullo from Hong Kong, China
All right, this might not be the most sophisticated study into Thailand's sex industry. But who cares? First of, there are that many books that deal with that subject in the first place, and this is one of the most enjoyable. It also provides a lot of info on the way Thais understand life. OK, a big chunk of the country is not involved in prostitution, but almost all seek "sabai jai" - peace of mind - a term that I had not learnt about before reading this book and that turns out to be invaluable when dealing with Thai people. And there are plenty like it throughout the book.

I also found quite true the theory that prostitution is actually liberating and helps to break the old ways in which women are treated and looked upon in Thailand. I would never phatom paying for sex (maybe because I don't need to ), but after spending time in Thailand, I can tell you that the attitude of the prostitutes over there is a lot more sane (and a lot more understandable for a Western mind) than the attitude of the general female population, specially those ladies from the upper class who apparently live inside a fiction bubble. There is obviously a dark side to prostitution, but please check out the night scene at the Hard Rock Cafe in Bangkok and then tell me what's wrong with girls who just want to have fun (except for the pathetic crowd of old Western guys hanging out with girls that look like their daughters). Talk to their customers and see who is using who. If anything, this book will also help the would-be sexual tourist avoid getting in trouble (and you can bet the police is always going to be on the girl's side). Whoever disagrees with this theory are either fooling themselves, or more likely, have NO clue of Asian culture. As another reviewer pointed out, it is the Thai/Asian prostution the one that has the more scary edge to it. As the book explains, the underage slave brothels are all in the Bangkok Chinatown. This is not racism, this is simply true.

It is the gripping (and documented) true story of an American business executive falsely accused of child abuse by a former college classmate. The accuser is John Cummings, a convicted child molester who was deported from Thailand when charges were filed against him in the US in 1988. He was sentenced to 68 years in jail, but an overzealous child abuse investigator got 40 years chopped off the sentence in exchange for Cummings spinning a tale of international "child sex tours." Although all of the people he accused were found not guilty or carges were dismissed in both US and Thai courts, in the meantime Cummings and his supporters (like US Senator Jesse Helms and economic doomsday author Howard Ruff) destroyed a world famous street children's shelter, along with the lives of dozens of innocent adults and children. This case began the media frenzy surrounding "sex tourism," and is often cited by the media as "Proof" even though no one was guilty. Steve Raymond spent two years in jail while the U.S. Justice Department -- realizing they had wrongly accused him -- used international pressure to keep him locked in a Thai jail and away from the media. He was finally freed after intervention by Amnesty International. Every time you turn the page, you believe that someone *HAS* to come into his cell and say, "I'm sorry, Mr. Raymond, we made a terrible mistake." That apology never came. READ THIS BOOK! If you think your American government will protect you, you'll learn differently. (Fully documented, BTW).

Powers that Be : Pridi Banomyong through the Rise and Fall of Thai Democracy  by Sulak Sivaraksa (Paperback - September 2000)

Book Description
Judging from their broad similarities, one is easily led to the impression that Pridi and Sulak were from the start the best of friends, fighting shoulder to shoulder and back to back against the encircling injustice. In the courageous and illuminating personal essay in this volume Sulak suggests otherwise. He recounts in vivid details his discord and ultimate unity with Pridi. Sulak's essay not only provides us with a valuable glimpse of Pridi's ideas and personality

Buddhism and the history of Thailand
This collection of essays concerns itself with the many facets of engaged Buddhism, from the very practical to the philosophical, that have expressed themselves throughout the history of Thailand in the life and work of Pridi Banomyong (1900-1983). Historian, religion scholar, and political analyst, Sulak Sivaraksa examines Banomyong's legacy and challenges contemporary Thais and people everywhere to consider their lives as worth more than the sum of material goods they own and instead discover.

Real Thai : The Best of Thailand's Regional Cooking by Nancie McDermott (Paperback - May 1992)

An excellent introduction to Thai cooking, May 1, 2000
This was the first Thai cookbook I purchased when I first discovered how easy Thai food was to make at home about 4 years ago. The Thai recipes prove that you can get restaurant quality Thai food in your home kitchen. My husband and I usually use this Thai cookbook two times or more a week and have never been disappointed. He doesn't like to cook that much so we are especially pleased with the simplicity of most recipes.

Our favorite Thai recipes include our restaurant standards Pad Thai, Chicken Curry and Swimming Rama. We have also found some great new dishes through this book such as the Garlic Shrimp, and the Burmese-Style Pork Curry with Fresh Ginger.

Cooking out of this book has let us explore wonderful new Thai dishes. Also, by all means add more chilis. The hotter the better.

River Kwai Railway : The Story of the Burma-Siam Railway by Clifford Kinvig

Siam Mapped : A History of the Geo-Body of a Nation by Thongchai Winichakul This work focuses on how this conflict between more local conceptions of space, often based on Buddhist cosmology, and more western concepts of politically bordered and defined states led to the crisis of 1893. Thongchai Winichakul's essential thesis concerns not a typical narrative of how Siam, and later Thailand, came to be, but how the perception of space changed in order to allow the creation of what he terms the 'geo-body' of the nation. This geo-body, whether as a map in schools or a logo for a political party, serves as one of the key ways in which nationalism is transmitted from generation to generation. In short, this work provides a new analysis of one of the many ways in which the Thai nation was created as an idea. As such, this book is valuable reading for those interested in Thai History and/or Southeast Asian history, or in the discourses and transmission of nationalism in general.

Robertson's Practical English-Thai Dictionary by Richard G. Robertson.  (Paperback - November 1989) Though the content of this Thai dictionary is good...Robertson's dictionary lacks depth and cross-referencing. If you desire a quick and easy guide to Thai...do not purchase this book. "Conversational Thai in 7 days" provides the same material and is easier to use plus it includes some basic Thai sentence structure. Another source that is just a good is the "Lonely Planet Thai Phrasebook"...not only does it provide Thai grammar and Thai vocabulary but it is small and covers a wide range of topics for such a small volume. comments by  Bjorn Andersson

A Rough Guide Phrasebook (Rough Guide Phrase Book)  This book is terrific!! It has English-Thai, and Thai-English sections, and shows Thai with consistent rominazation, plus Thai script. Now, the best part of this Thai phrasebook is the intro (before the dictionary begins) to Thai language. It gives all the basic Thai grammar rules (summed up nicer than many Thai language books!) Rules for different kinds of questions and everything. Even a section on profanity (so you'll know when people are upset:) And all examples give Thai script, roman-Thai (including tone marks), and English. I highly recommend this book to anyone even remotely interested in the Thai Languages. Besides, it's got a GREAT price :) comments by  Bjorn Andersson
