Traditional Albanian Dance
Albanian folk dances usually feature themes of
honor, loyalty and bravery without leaving out those dances dedicated to
love and festivities, such as weddings. These dances contain many emotions,
which are expressed through the moves of the dancers. Albania has a rich
folklore and every region has a characteristic dance.
Traditional Albanian folk dance is important in Albanian culture. Every five
years there is a National Folk Festival in Gjirokastra where dancers and
musicians come together.
Albanian Dance is usually danced by the Albanians in full armour, and is
supposed to be the ancient Pyrrhic dance. Wilder groups amuse themselves in
the Pyrrhic dance of the Spacchiotes, danced in short kirtles, long boots,
with a quiver of arrows and bent bow; the Klepht and Albanian dances, where
a long chain of dancers is led by a coryphĉeus. He nods his head or waves a
handkerchief, to mark the time.

Folk Dance Ensemble of Tirana
Ensemble "Tirana", member of CIOFF, performing folkloric dances,
songs and instrumental melodies, mostly from ethnographic
regions of Tirana, but having also pieces from the different
ethnographic regions of Albania and Kosovo, always in live music
expresses welcome.
The Folklore Ensemble "Tirana", founded in Tirana, in 1978 is
composed from the group of dance, orchestra and the group of
singers. We perform folkloric dances, songs and instrumental
melodies, mostly from ethnographic regions of Tirana, but have
also pieces from the different ethnographic regions of Albania
and Kosovo, always in live music. That makes our performances
having a variety of folk costumes of various areas, as well as
numerous characteristic musical instruments, which are realized
by the famous masters of Albanian ethnography. Folklore ensemble
"Tirana" has took part in all of festivals and several
activities. It is member of CIOFF from the year 1994 and has
participate continually at the national folklore activities ,
moreover. It has had a successful representation in the
international folk festivals and tours organized in different
countries as well as in Turkey, Greece, Croatia, France,
Germany, Egypt, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Sweden and so
on. The ensemble consists of 25-35 members depending on the
festival's conditions.

The National Ensemble of Folk Songs and Dances (NEFSD) was established as a
professional ensemble in 1957, having all the artistic and technical
components of an artistic troupe. The Ensemble includes the solo singers,
the dance troupe, the vocalists and the small orchestra. Its artistic goal
is to elaborate, develop and propagate ancient and contemporary Albanian
folk treasures, which include a great musical, instrumental and
choreographic richness from various folk areas, generating a great harmony
of motifs. The Albanian folk is distinct from that of other countries for
its originality, long existence, as well as for the variety of artistic
genres. Albania has a lot of ethnographical areas, each having its
specialties in costumes, songs, dances, rites and customs, which are even
diverse within a given area.
