Traditional Algerian Dance
Algeria's tales come from the Berbers of the
Kabyle region and describe their view of creation and various myths.
Algerian Dance includes movements also used in Raqs Sharqi, such as
shimmies, hip circles and drops. There is a strong Andalucian influence in
the dance, particularly seen in the fiery hand movements. Amel Tafsout is an
Algerian dancer who specialises in Maghreb dance.
Belly Dance - Ouled Nail is a dance term that falls entirely in the
realm of tradition and folklore. (It is pronounced "oooled nile".) Actually,
they are a Berber tribe whose territory extends from Biskra to Jelfa in
Algeria. They are said to have originated in the "Montes des Ouled", and are
quite prosperous due to the manner in which the women of the tribe earn
their living: by dancing and prostitution.
The name "belly dance" came from the French danse du ventre. This term that
was actually used to refer to an entirely different dance from Algeria
performed by the Ouled Nail tribe, yet the French word ventre has no such
vulgar associations. It simply refers to the frontal region just below the
stomach, but makes no reference to the sexual region. One might speak of the
ventre of a violin without any fear of offending someone.
