Traditional Chilean dance
La Cueca, a traditional Chilean folk dance, is especially popular at
countryside celebrations. It originates from peasant folklore and some
sources believe that it emerged as a symbol of the newborn republic in
rebellion against the Spanish crown. The steps represent the cock stalking
the hen, the amorous courting of a couple, or the cornering of a filly by a
huaso (Chilean cowboy), which he is trying to lasso. Man and woman dance to
the classic rhythm, twirling their kerchiefs in the air.
Women wear the traditional gowns and hold a handkerchief or pañuelo with
which they tease their partner. The men wear their guazo attire, including
poncho, hat, boots and spurs. Parra herself wrote and composed many cuecas
and helped to preserve others that were in danger of disappearing because
they only existed in the oral tradition.
The geography, climate, and culture of Chile, a long narrow country that
runs for 2666 miles along the west coast of South America, vary greatly from
region to region. Chilean folk dance styles, music, and costumes reflect
diverse influences, from the mining industry and desert climate of the
north, to the snowcapped peaks and fishing culture of the south. This
program presented dances from the various parts of the country, as well as
from Easter Island, which lies in the Pacific Ocean 2294 miles to the west
but is claimed by Chile as part of its offshore
territories.
Historically, traditional or folk dances were not performed by the Chilean
aristocracy, whose dances were of European origin—waltzes, gavottes,
minuets, and the like. Estampas de Chile opened its program with two stately
and restrained dances of the colonial period, a Cuando and a Polka. For
these dances, the performers wore the elegant evening attire typical of the
18th century.

founded in Toronto, Canada, on June 1993, bearing as its main
objective the expression of Chilean culture to the Canadian
community, through the universal language of dance and music.
The Group, consisting of 20 dancers, has gradually developed
into a dynamic folklore organization that is known for its
discipline, authenticity, expressiveness, and a high level of
performance skills.
Grupo Chile includes in its extensive repertoire a wide range of
music and dances representing the most important folkloric
regions of Chile; the North with strong influence of Aymara
culture; the South with traditions of Chiloe Island; and the
mystery of the Polynesian Easter Island; as well the group
performs dances of the Central Region of Chile, highlighted by
Chile's national dance "La Cueca".
