Traditional Luxembourg Dance - Echternach
Dancing Procession
Each spring, pilgrims flock to Echternach, Luxembourg, to participate in the
town's famed "Dancing Procession." Taking two steps back for every three
steps forward, the dancers painstakingly creep toward the grave of St.
Willibrord, an Anglo-Saxon missionary who died in A.D. 739. Once there,
participants pray for ailing relatives, for Willibrord is the patron saint
of patients suffering from movement disorders.
Historians assume that the pilgrimages to Echternach, seeking divine
protection against the dreaded St. Vitus's dance, the plague, and other
illnesses, were (in 1348 or 1378) at the origin of the dancing procession of
Echternach. In fact, it adopted the most varied forms. At one time, there
was even a "motionless procession". In this case, the pilgrims used to stop
at the sound of a bell, and then moved forward a few steps, before falling
down on their knees, and starting the gestures all over again. At another
time, the "crawling procession" was in fashion; the pilgrims would crawl
under a stone, facing the cross of St. Willibrord. There were still a few
abuses in the practice of these religious customs. For example, a
"cattle-bell dance" used to take place in front of the cross which was
erected on the Market place. This dance was prohibited in 1664.

Vallée des Sept Châteaux
The group was founded in 1952 on the occasion of an historical
procession in Mersch. Since that time the Luxembourgish folklore
was kept alive by a young dynamic group. The membership is
constantly growing. Nowadays the choreographical program of the
group would last several hours. The dances shown range from the
middle ages to the 19th century. Most of the dances are from the
18th and 19th century.
The costumes and dresses are from the 18th century and were
researched by archivist Alain Atten. The one-piece coat, which
is worn by our musicians, is a copy of the officers uniform of
the "Brotherhood of Young People" worn in the rural area, as
well as commoners.The group performs and preserves the old
tradition of the "Vallée des Sept Châteaux".
