Belarus’s opera and ballet companies have
long-standing reputations. Their primary venue, the Opera and Ballet Theater
(founded in 1932) in Minsk, holds regular and well-attended performances.
The popular Theater of Musical Comedy (1970) is also located in the capital,
as is the Belarusian Musical Academy (1932). Of the many orchestras in the
country, the most prominent are the Belarusian State Philharmonic and the
Belarusian State Symphony Orchestra. The state musical repertoire is under
the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Culture.
The leading drama theater in Belarus is the Yanka Kupala Belarusian State
Academic Theater (1920), located in Minsk. Other major theaters include the
Gorky Russian Theater (1932) in Babruysk, and the Yakub Kolas Belarusian
State Academic Theater (1925) in Minsk. The avant-garde Minsk theater
Vol’naya Stsena (Free Stage) opened in 1990 to focus on Belarusian drama and
classics.

State Dance Company of Belarus (Folk Dance Ensemble) is
the leading National choreographic company of Belarus. It was
created 45 years ago and with time it became one of the best
professional companies of the former Soviet Union. The State
Dance Ensemble of Belarus is a leading choreographic collective
of the country. It was created almost 50 years ago and after a
number of years it became the best professional collective of
Belarus. In October 1999 the government of the republic
conferred the ensemble an honorary title of Honoured Collective
of the Republic of Belarus.
For the last fifteen years the Company has been directed by
Valentin Dudkevich, professor and People’s Artist of the
Republic of Belarus. Folk art for him is the way to convey the
historic tradition, linking generations. That’s why blending
folklore and best achievements of the world choreography is not
only the credo of the art of Valentin Dudkevich as the
ballet-master, but also the most accurate definition of the
whole contents and essence of the State Dance Company concert
program.
The State Dance Company of Belarus repertoire comprises several
large concert programs, which include not only Belarussian
traditional and character genre dances, but dances of other
nationalities living in Belarus as well. Belarussian audience
fell in love with such dances as unfading with time “LYAVONIKHA”
which became one of the symbols representing Belarus, comic
“QUADRILLE ON THE STOOLS”, women’s tribal round-dance ”TERNITSA”,
men’s dance “VYASKOVYIYA GULNI”(village games), the dance of
lovers ”ARELI” (the swings), the rhythmical dance “TOPOTUKHA”,
gypsy dance, Jewish dance, the Ukrainian dance “GOPAK”, Russian
dance “ALONG THE WIDE STREET”

The programme of the Ensemble “Belaya Rus” comprises two sections. The first
sections includes folk dances, games, traditions and rituals united into a
single dancing theatrical whole titled “Belaya Rus, my own!” It embraces
both lyrical compositions based on classical dances – “Belaya Rus”,
“Fantasia on Belarusian Themes”, “A Midsummer Night”, “Kupalinka”; stylized
– “Did Yas Mow”, “Good Evening”, “Roller”, and folklore – “Bouncer”, “Nodder”,
“Merry – Maker”. The dances vividly reveal the rites of seeking a fern
flower on a midsummer night, the rites of the folk dance “Poker” and the
rites of nuptial.
The second section contains dances of other nationalities on the territory
of Belarus. They display the national traits, rituals, fragments of Russian,
Ukrainian, Moldavian, etc. These are mainly suites that allow selling the
local colour of national dances in full.
The Ensemble is accompanied by the Folk Instruments Orchestra. The Orchestra
consists of 7 musicians playing the bayan, dulcimer, flute, violine,
bass-guitar, drums, and wooden instruments making noise.
The repertoire of the Ensemble “Belaya Rus” is permanently perfected, the
work at new dances and compositions is under way. Every production is an
original expression of new thoughts and images transformed info choreography
and eurhythmies.
