Traditional Slovakian Dance
In Slovakia, tradition is also kept alive in the form of music and dance.
Slovak folk music is popular throughout Slovakia, with different regions
performing their own unique dances. When Slovak folk groups perform a dance
from a particular region, they wear the traditional costumes typical of that
region.
Slovak folk dances are especially popular in the Orava, Liptov, Saris and
Horehronie regions of Slovakia. The Slovak folk costumes, including
accessories, such as hats, shoes, boots and ribbons, are made in the same
way as the original national costumes.
Whirling dances of the old style are characteristic of the Slovak village
environment, but they are steadily disappearing from contemporary dance
activity. Eastern Slovakia is an area where it is still possible to find a
relatively large number of localities where this type of dance exists in a
relatively lively form. This situation is helped to a significant degree by
traditional groups, especially of players of stringed instruments, but also
of other musical instruments, who maintained this dance in the folk
tradition and in the area of folklorism.
One of the significant musical dance localities of eastern Slovakia is
Zámutov, where traditional stringed instrument music is still performed. In
particular the viola or violin counter playing form the harmonic rhythmic
accompaniment, reflected in the dance expression of the dancers. A typical
musical accompaniment of counter playing to whirling dances is called a
duvaj. The onomatopoeicly coloured word gives a picture of the actual method
of playing - legato strengthening of notes. The style of playing of the
accompanying instruments contains various technical and rhythmic properties
which identify this style.
An identical method of accompanying playing also occurs during wedding
dances, which are part of ceremonial folklore. This indirectly points to the
archaic nature of this style of playing. The moderately fast tempo of the
whirling dances is an important style forming feature of the accompanying
counter playing. It is used during both the current čardáš tunes and the
wedding dances.

We also perform under the name Saltarello. This one was
established in 1995, when we began to travel abroad more often
and soon found out, that the translation of the whole name into
foreign languages was more than complicated…
Step by step, we have added more and more dance styles to the
traditional country dance – historical dances, baroque, square
dances ruled directly by callers, tap-dance, clogging,
cancan...in 1996 we performed for the first time in Slovakia
Irish tap-dance style ...we restored few musicals, started to
devote our attention to Belly Dance …and our latest passion is
modern country, especially Line Dance.
We have approximately 100 performances per year. Besides lot of
events in Slovakia, we take part also in many of them in Czech
Republic, Austria, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Italy, Bulgaria,
Netherlands…and we have also visited the “birthplace” of country
– Nashville/USA.
We love dance and everything that brings joy of movement. We do
not only perform the dance, but we even spread it out among
everybody who wants to learn or just have fun. We organize
country balls (in the past – Country balls on Danube; later we
started with our own tradition of country balls called CB001 and
we reached number CB008) and dance courses (Belly Dance, Line
Dance)
Under our “protective wings”, the new country generation is
growing up – in our children dance ensemble Butterfly, with kids
from the age of 3 (nowadays about 35 children).
