Ballet Lizt Alfonso, Cuba Libre,
Cuban-American Dancers, are just a few of the dance
companies, dance schools, dancing organizations and dance wear suppliers
that that can be found in our comprehensive Directory of Cuban Dance
Companies.
Afro Cuban and traditional (Folklore) Dancing
in Havana and Santiago de Cuba The Cuban folklore is based on the
Afro Cuban and Franco Haitian roots. A lot of ballroom dances have developed
from here, for example Danzón, Son, Mambo, Cha Cha Cha, Casino, Congas y
Comparsas as well as rural dances (Bailes Campesinos). The programme
contains elements of all these dances. The more elements you know, the
easier you can put your personal emphasis on a special dance.
The five-day-course includes one class with live music, the ten-day-course
includes two days with live music. The Picture from the website of
Viamas GmbH "Danza y Movimiento Reisen" Take a look at their unique
dream dance vacations!
Traditional Cuban Dance and Orisha Traditions
Most of the sacred dances we perform are from the Afro-Cuban religion of
Santeria, or Regla de Ocha. Santeria is based on the Orisha worship of the
traditional religion of the Yoruba people from West Africa, in what is now
southwestern Nigeria and eastern Benin.
Yorubas brought their religion to Cuba during slavery. Nearly 1 million
Africans from West and Central Africa were captured by Cuba's Spanish
colonists and brought to Cuba during the 16th through 19th centuries. As
Cuba's plantations expanded in the late 18th and 19th centuries, so did the
slave trade. Most enslaved Africans in Cuba were Yoruba, and thus had a
significant cultural influence on the Africans of various ethnic
backgrounds.
Afro-Cuban music is also influenced by African ethnic groups from the congo
and arara region, as well as by the all-male society of the Abakua. more
Rumba & Other Folkloric Dance
Afro-Cuban rumba is based on African rhythms and dance moves but with
influences from Spanish Gitano/gypsy flamenco dance and song. Other popular
folkloric dances include comparsa and carnaval dance, chancleta and yuka.
more
Traditional Popular Dance
In addition to traditional Afro-Cuban folkloric styles, Cuba is also known
for its popular traditional dances such as Son, Cha Cha Cha, Danzon and
Mambo. more
Fusions/New Styles
The latest craze in Cuba (and Miami) right now is Timba -- a blend of
Afro-Cuban folkloric music, jazz and even funk and Hip Hop that makes
everyone want to move. IFE-ILE, Inc. is a non-profit
organization dedicated to the preservation, promotion and cultivation of
Afro-Cuban culture and folklore through the arts.

Cuban Dance Company
Ballet Lizt Alfonso
Choreographer, dancer, teacher and artistic director, Lizt
Alfonso created LIZT ALFONSO DANCE CUBA in October 1991. At the
beginning the company was called “Danzas Ib้ricas” and belonged
to the Cuban Dance Promotion Center (PRODANZA), but in October
of 1992 it was declared an independent company and changed to
their current name. The Company has been resident in Havana's
Gran Teatro since October 2000.
The LIZT ALFONSO DANCE CUBA company is comprised exclusively of
female dancers, a Musical Ensemble, a technical team and a
direction team, all of them under the leadership of Lizt
Alfonso. Also it has a Junior Ballet and Vocational Workshops.
The main objective of the LIZT ALFONSO DANCE CUBA is to present
to a unique and dynamic show, demostrating a “Cuban” way to
perform the combination of Flamenco, Ballet, Afro - Cuban and
Cuban rhythms. Elegance and artistic rigor characterize the
unique fusion style of this Company.
From the beginning the LIZT ALFONSO DANCE CUBA has worked to
create a repertoire capable of satisfying the most
discriminating varied tastes. It has obtained an important place
within the cultural environment of their country. It has also
been able to create diverse shows, constantly expanding the
spectrum of their possibilities. Cuban culture draws on
traditional Spanish and African roots and also shows the
influence of European music.
Their shows are in demand in theaters and the main hotels and
tourist resorts in Cuba such as Varadero and Cayo Coco
www.solmeliacuba.com
