Traditional Bermudan Dance - Gombey Dancing
A tradition that began when black slaves were first brought from Africa and
the Caribbean. "Gombey" is derived from an African word meaning rhythm. It
was originally intended to be performed only on Boxing Day (December 26) and
New Year's Day - the two days of the year when slaves were given a rest from
their labors. Today, Gombey dance and prance on Boxing Day, New Year's Day,
other important events such as football (soccer ) matches, at festivals or
parades and holidays, also at hotels and guest houses. There is a method of
collecting contributions from spectators. The musical accompaniment is
usually a kettle drum with two snare drums, covered with goat skin, and a
beer bottle fife which produces the sound of a flute crossed with a whistle.
Their acrobatic Bermudian members whose routines are based on African,
American Indian, Biblical, British "mummers" and West Indian lore and
traditions.
Each group is a "crowd." The Captain wears the most elaborate costume and is
the crowd leader. The Wild Indian and Trapper have a perpetual chase. The
Chiefs also carry large tomahawks and shields. Warriors or Choppers include
children of families. Under the Captain, the dancers have duets and solos
simulating combat. Once, they also re-enacted biblical stories like David's
fight with Goliath. Gombey troupes include Warner's Gombeys, Norford's, the
Shakey Smith Troupe, Richardson's, and Wilson's Troupe. Books include Gombey
Boy and Bermuda Gombey by American born Bermuda author Mrs. Louise Jackson.
Bermuda Dance Festival
For two months at the beginning of each year
Bermuda becomes an international hub for cultural exchange and artistic
growth. Performing artists from a range of disciplines come from around the
globe to present a schedule of events designed to appeal to a wide and
diverse audience.
An annual event for three decades, the Bermuda Festival had auspicious
beginnings. It owes its conception to world renowned violinist, the late
Lord Menuhin, who worked with the then Governor of Bermuda the late Sir
Edwin Leather, and John Ellison who became its first chairman, to launch the
Festival in January 1976.
Bermuda Festival Press Statement 22nd November 2007
Due to the uncertainty of the availability of the Ruth Seaton James Centre
for the 2007 Bermuda Festival, events scheduled for that venue have been
relocated.
Tickets already sold for Principals & Soloists of The Royal Ballet, Vanguard
Jazz Orchestra, Red Priest and Moscow Chamber Orchestra have been exchanged
for seats in City Hall Theatre. Ticket holders for these performances will
be advised by telephone or email of the seats they have been allotted.
Sadly, there is no alternative venue suitable for the Mark Morris Dance
Group so they will not be appearing in 2007. However, we hope to have them
in 2008. All tickets sold for the Mark Morris performances will be refunded.

Somerset School
of Dancing
In response to requests for more artistic activity in the
Somerset area, Sal Hodgson and Ann Cherry founded the Somerset
School of Dancing in 1970.
After being the first Bermudian ballet school to hold
examinations administered by the British Ballet Organization in
1971, the school became affiliated with the universally
recognized Royal Academy of Dancing in 1982.
In 1987, the school expanded to the Hamilton area with classes
being held at the Masonic hall on King street. 1990 saw the need
yet again for larger premises and the new and present studio was
opened hosted by a fully qualified staff trained specifically in
Dance Education.
We continue to gain recognition as a school with the highest
standard in classical training. Mrs Hodgson and staff attend
extensive teachers courses with the Royal Academy of Dance to
remain abreast of modern teaching methods. Presently, we offer
classes in all disciplines of dance to over 350 students.
The
Sabor Dance School specializes in offering high quality
instruction with respect to Latin dance. The dance school has
brought together Bermuda's best instructors with an aim to,
through the use of a carefully developed curriculum, produce
strong, confident, competent and fun loving dancers. Each week
approximately 150 students attend classes at the school and as
they develop they are encouraged to dance socially at our
explosive local dance venues.
The Sabor Dance School, located in the purpose-built dance
studios at the Bermuda College, offers several classes each
week. These classes are offered to students of all levels and
are truly a fun and exciting way to spend an evening. Relax and
enjoy this beautiful music and dance, taught by instructors who
have a passion for and an understanding of this global dance
culture.
