Traditional Egyptian Dance
The folk dance which led to Oriental dance (often called "belly dance") has
been part of local culture throughout North Africa, the Middle East, and as
far east as Iran for centuries. According to research performed by Morocco,
oral tradition links it back to ancient times, when it was used as to
support childbirth.
Raqs Sharqi
Raqs Sharqi, (literally, ‘Eastern Dance’) is the classical, popular and folk
dance of Egypt. It is rooted in pre Islamic times and its traditions have
been passed on over the centuries. It is taught within the family as a
social grace, and ornaments many celebrations. It has always survived in its
folk form, but there have been periods in the history of Egypt when the
classical dance has been exalted and refined, particularly in the Islamic
courts of the 10th and 11th centuries, and in the 18th century courts of the
Ottoman rulers of Egypt.
Baladi
Among the various forms of Raqs Sharqi Baladi holds a special position.
Baladi means “of the country”, and it is uniquely Egyptian. It is the urban
form derived from folk tradition. Baladi music and dance developed together,
when country people migrated to the cities in the early years of the
twentieth century. The arts flourished, and folk tunes, songs and rhythms
took on new colour, new shapes and sophistication. What had begun as a
simple folk song or dance became more refined and complex.

Marta offers belly dance workshops, belly dance music and
choreography material for download online. Marta performed as an
oriental dancer for more than 25 years in 22 different
countries, with her 16-piece Egyptian band. After her final
night club performance in 2000 in the Sheraton Gezira Hotel in
Cairo, Egypt, Marta retired from night club shows. She now
spends most of her time in her home in the suburbs of Istanbul
where she is passing on her knowledge and experience in belly
dance workshops, preparing choreographies for dancers, and she
also has an Atelier where she designs top-class belly dance
costumes and evening gowns for stage singers and dancers, under
